Bak Chang.... Dumpling

Bites Tale : No more shopping for me! Did a lot of shopping... but... i'm still unhappy :(

I think the best "Bak Chang" i.e. Dumpling (this is how the hokkiens call dumplings) i've eaten are the ones my parents made. But, it has been years that they have made it... they said it involved too much work... so we normally just buy from a lady in one of the stall at Foh Sang now a days. Her bak changs are quite good actually... And when it's "Bak Chang Festival", we ordered from friends who know where to order nice bak changsss... but still i missed my own home cooked bak chang! By the way, i like having my bak chang cold, i mean, at room temperature... instead of hot.

K, back to the story... i always have a special feeling toward bak chang... although i can't eat much because i have gastric... buying and eating bak chang are like a "tradition"... very old-dated and kampung-ish... although i know hypermarkets in KL like Carrefour is selling them during the "Bak Chang Festival".. but i never have thought that bak chang can get so "commercialised"...

Here's what a friend of my mum get for us from his KL trip!

Nice packaging huh? Let's see what we have inside...

The taste was very nice too! (Sorry for the blur pic!)

Everything is turning to be so commercialised nowadays... wonder when can we have outlet like this selling Yam Pork!

Avena Cake House

Bites Tale : To all, my friend is selling her own self-handmade earrings through her blog... she is based in Kota Kinabalu... if you are interested, do drop by HERE! I know more designs are coming!!!

I love buns. If you, like me, love extra soft buns.. then this is the right place for you!

I'm in love with the tuna bun (RM1.30 each) and tuna cheese bun (RM1.80 each) from here!

They are simply delicious!

By the way, this cake house is also very famous for their durian swiss roll. The swiss roll are selling like hot cakes and sometimes they will be gone within 15 mins, especially during lunch time. There are times where my friend needs to fight with me for the last one... really not bad, even my family love it.

But, I prefer their cheese roll (RM4.50 for 5 pcs)... and donuts (RM 0.70 each)... and egg mayo buns (RM1.20 each)... and cream puff with peach (umm.. either RM0.80 or RM 1 each)... and even their sandwich bread (RM1.90 per loaf)... and.... (brain jammed!)

(stomach making noises) Feel like going there again soon! Wei, wei (you know who you are), wanna go again tomorrow?

French Toast Cheddar Cheese Sandwich

Bites Tale : I had a great time at my friend's raya open house... she invited me to her house again for candle light dinner tonight.. since there's only 2 of us! I am a happy meatball.

This is the 1st time I made French toast.

It’s so easy.. but damn fattening… hehehe… I let mum try and she asked me to make for her again next time… she said it’s better than those at “Hong Kong Recipe” at Warisan Square.

You can spread some mustard on the bread, it will taste better, that’s for sure… but I didn’t…. because I forgot to buy it!

Here’s the recipe:

Ingredient:

2 large eggs

1 small cup of milk (i used full cream milk)

1/2 tsp salt

8 slices of sandwich bread

Some cheddar cheese (depends on your likings.. i cut it very thick!)

Some butter to be spread on bread and for frying

Method :

1. Beat eggs and beat slightly in a bowl, add milk and salt, set aside;

2. Add milk and salt, set aside;

3. Spread some butter on the sandwich bread;

4. Place cheddar cheese slices on 4 slices of bread, then cover with the remaining bread;

5. Heat 1 tbsp butter in a skillet

6. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both side of bread fully;

7. Cook both side until browned;

8. Indulge.

Next time if I’m making this again… I will put lots and lots of mustard… I love mustard!!

Hot Milk Sponge Cake

Bites Tale : I baked this because I failed that

It seemed to be a better choice baking this compared to baking normal butter cake for my dad’s birthday as butter cake sounds… umm, well…“Normal”. At least sponge cake sounded healthier too as it uses minimal amount of butter.

But then, I failed in baking this too… though is still edible… you’ll see why later. (I blamed myself for trying to be smart… sigh…)

This is the 1st time I bake a sponge cake… recipe is took from the “Joy of Cooking” he bought for me. It’s really easy to bake and you can use this to make swiss-roll too. Just pour the mixture into a swiss-roll tin instead of a normal baking tin. I’ve got the texture and taste right… was kinda happy also… but still, I wished I hadn’t “modified” the recipe!!

Here’s the recipe:

Ingredient:

90g sifted cake flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

60ml milk

30g unsalted butter

140g caster sugar

5 eggs

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 180۫C.

2. Sift together the cake flour and baking powder, sift it 3 times and return to the sifter;

3. Put the sugar and eggs into the mixer and beat until light coloured, tripled in volume until the texture becomes softly whipped cream;

4. Heat the milk and butter in a small saucepan until the butter is melted (I used the microwave oven);

5. In 3 additions, sift the flour mixture over the top of the egg mixture and mix again.

6. Add the hot milk mixture and mix until well combined.

7. Pour mixture into baking tin and bake in oven for 20-25 minutes.

But, I didn’t stopped at step 6… instead, I added lots of sultanas into the mixture before pouring it into the baking tin… thinking that how much my family love sultanas… that’s where I made mistake… ended up the sponge cake was undercooked because the sultanas “sink” to the bottom of the tin and affected the heat cannot be distributed evenly.

But we still used it to be my dad’s birthday cake (paiseh, paiseh! my white choc coating is so ugly)

Luckily, the candles helps... pretty?

I’ll definitely be baking this again and no more modifying recipe!

A dinner date turns out to be Hell...

Bites Tale : I was wrong for not being able to decide on where to have dinner, and for having so much comments on places he suggested...

But, i really don't think i deserved such treatments... (Scene 1 & 2 - before dinner)

And for him to think of someone else... (Scene 3 - after dinner)

May be i was too sensitive on Scene 3... well, may be... may be not!

Is it because he is thinking of that someone, that's why he wouldn't even tolerate my indecisiveness on where to have dinner???

Damn! i hate this!

P/S: Something strange about the sun today... i wanted to snap a pic of it but i left my camera at home (i blame him for my forgetfulness today and whatever i did wrong today)... click here if you wanna see.

May be is a portrait of my feelings now... i'm sad... and i'm scared... die.

Atong Fish Head Mee Hoon

Update : Now Atong Fish Head Mee Hoon has branches in Wisma Merdeka and Inanam G Mart Food Court

Bites Tale :
He asked me out for dinner tonight and let me decide the place, i dunno where to go yet. Any suggestion?

This is the rice vermicelli soup I love the best in KK!

I’ve been telling 1 of my friend how good it is, like me, she loves food too and she can’t wait to go. But I never have a chance to bring her there as both were busy and our work places were too far from each other. Luckily, we were both on leave last Saturday and by chance she needs me to bring her to Penampang so we went there for lunch.

It is located at Bundusan Food Court, Jalan Bundusan (next to a car wash and behind Kia show room), and it’s from a stall called “Atong Fish Head Mee Hoon”. Although fish head is the most famous there, but I always order fish slices instead. (definitely easier to eat.. without having to “fight” with the bones).

At RM5 per bowl, I think it is reasonable since they are generous in giving the fish and the rice vermicelli. Now, they even have 3 other types of fish (including salmon) for you to choose but they are a bit pricey at RM 7 per bowl while if you choose salmon it will cost you RM10 per bowl. Since they ran out of the normal fish type, we choose one of the RM 7 one.. it didn’t disappoint us at all…the fish slices was fresh!

Look at this!

Damn nice I tell you… and my friend totally agreed with me!

Pic : If you don’t mind the dust from the road in front of the food court, it’s a must to go!
